Reinforcement Learning for Building Construction and Design

Automated construction and design technologies will play a major role to meet the global building needs of an increasing population. On the construction side, automation has the potential to address challenges like improving production time, labor productivity, and worker safety, as well as compensating for labor shortages. On the design part, it’s important for automated systems to better understand human behaviors and intentions. This talk will present two lines of work that address the two aforementioned topics. Specifically, I will talk about our efforts of using reinforcement learning (RL) to solve contact-rich assembly tasks to enhance the process of construction automation, and of exploring human-in-the-loop RL to increase the granularity of human-AI collaborations in the building design process.
